Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does it take to get my licence? Is there any temporary status?
It depends on when you mail away your application. The processing time in the summer is 2-3 months and closer to 5-6 months in the winter. Unfortunately there is NO temporary status. You cannot buy ammunition or firearms until the card comes back in the mail.
  • How old do you have to be to take the course?
You have to be at least 12 years old to take the Non-Restricted and 18 to take the Restricted. Between the ages of 12 and 18 you will get a Minors permit. The Minors permit allows you to shoot within general supervision of a licensed adult, and also means you do not have to take class again when you turn 18. Instead, you would just file the adult paperwork, and you're good to go.
  • Do I ever have to take the class again?
As long as you renew your licence every five years, the class is good for life. The only time you may have to take the class again, is if you let your licence expire, or you get in firearms related legal trouble.
  • Can I hunt with Restricted firearms?
No, the only thing you can legally do with your Restricted firearms, is take them to an approved range for target practice or a competition.
  • Can I shoot my firearms on the family farm or acreage?
Non-Restricted firearms, as long as you're doing everything safely and following the rules for your area, are usually ok. Check into your areas bylaws to be sure. With Restricted firearms, you would need to call 1-800-731- 4000, and follow their guidance. There are ways to have a range on your private property. Until you go through the proper steps, and have the CFO approve your range you CANNOT shoot Restricted firearms.
  • Can I take the Restricted only?
No, you need to complete the Non-Restricted class prior to taking the Restricted class.
  • Is there any experience required to take the classes?
No, the CFSC program was designed specifically with beginners in mind. You will learn and practice everything you need to know during the class itself.
  • What if I can't make my scheduled class?
We understand that sometimes things happen, where you are not able to attend your scheduled class. Please do your best to let us know 3 days before your scheduled class, and we will happily transfer your payment to another class of your choice (one time only).
  • Is there an option to do an online class?
No, due to the structure of the class, and two part exam (written and handling), the class must be done in person. No online version of this course is recognized by the Alberta Hunter Education Association.
  • Can I go hunting right away?
You need to also complete the Hunter Education Class, either online or in person. You can complete the Hunter Education Class prior to doing the CFSC, or after, it's up to you.
